Vortex Mod Manager Download 2.7.2

Vortex Mod Manager is the Nexus Mods desktop app for finding, installing, and deploying mods on Windows. This page hosts the current stable installer, the previous stable build, and the current GitHub beta on files.modvortex.com.

Hosted installers

We keep three Windows EXEs on files.modvortex.com: the current stable, the previous stable, and the current GitHub beta.

Current stable

2.7.2 is the Vortex Mod Manager download for new PCs and normal updates. Use this file unless you have a reason to stay on the last stable or try a beta.

Previous stable

2.7.1 is the last stable installer we keep. Use it if 2.7.2 breaks a game, an extension, or a collection you already rely on.

Current beta

2.8.0-beta.2 is the newest public GitHub pre-release. It can change quickly. Keep a backup of your Vortex state before you switch.

Installers come from files.modvortex.com. Skip mobile APK sites, HappyMod pages, and any "vortex mod" package that is not the Windows EXE from Nexus Mods.

Vortex Mod Manager download

Pick a Windows EXE from files.modvortex.com. Each file is the official installer that Nexus Mods publishes on GitHub. Run it on a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC that already has your games in Steam or another launcher.

Current stable 2.7.2

Use this Vortex Mod Manager download for a new install or a straight update. Close Vortex before you run the setup file.

What Vortex Mod Manager is

Vortex Mod Manager is the current mod manager from Nexus Mods. You use it to download mods, keep load orders sane, and switch profiles without copying folders by hand.

Nexus Mods and Black Tree Gaming Ltd build the app. modvortex.com is an independent site. We host the public Windows installer and explain setup. We do not run Nexus Mods, and we do not sell mods.

People search vortex mod, mod vortex, and vortex manager for the same desktop tool. The product name on the installer and in the app is Vortex. Treat "vortex" on its own as a mixed search. This page is only about the Nexus Mods manager, not airguns, weather apps, or mobile mod stores.

Why you download Vortex

A vortex mod manager download puts the Nexus 1-click flow on your PC. You install a game once in Vortex, then pull mods from Nexus Mods without unzipping into the game folder yourself.

Vortex keeps each game in a profile, stores files in a staging folder, and deploys them when you are ready to play. That is the difference between a manager and a pile of loose archives.

If you only wanted Skyrim or Fallout 4 mods, a generic mods page will not install them for you. You still need a manager. Vortex is the one Nexus Mods ships for that job.

What Vortex handles for you

Nexus Mods 1-click

Sign in, pick Download with Vortex on a Nexus file, and the archive lands in the right game. You skip the old Nexus Mod Manager hand-off.

Profiles

Keep a lightweight setup and a heavy collection on the same install. Switch profiles when you want a stable campaign or a test load order.

Staging folder

Vortex stores enabled mods in a staging folder, then deploys them into the game. You can purge a messy deploy without deleting the downloads.

Conflict rules

When two mods touch the same file, Vortex asks which one wins. You set a rule once instead of guessing after the game crashes.

Collections

A collection is a shared list of mods and rules. Vortex installs the pack and tracks updates so you are not chasing 200 separate pages.

Extension games

The core app plus community extensions cover Skyrim, Fallout, Cyberpunk 2077, Stardew Valley, Baldur's Gate 3, and hundreds of other PC titles.

What 2.7.2 changes

The 2.7 line adds Health Check. Vortex warns you about broken, missing, or idle mods before you launch the game, so you spend less time hunting a bad plugin after a crash.

2.7.2 is the current stable Windows installer we host. We also keep 2.7.1 for rollback and 2.8.0-beta.2 for testers. New PCs should start on the stable EXE.

Worth knowing in 2.7

  • Health Check flags mods that will not load cleanly.
  • Collection updates are less likely to loop on huge packs.
  • Browsing collections while logged out no longer floods error pop-ups.

Update from an older Vortex

  1. Close Vortex and the game.
  2. Download vortex-setup-2.7.2.exe from the button above.
  3. Run the installer and keep your existing install folder if the setup offers it.
  4. Open Vortex, let it finish any extension updates, then deploy before you play.

Games people run through Vortex

Nexus Mods lists hundreds of games for Vortex. The searches that sit next to vortex mod are still a short list: Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout New Vegas, and Cyberpunk 2077. Steam is the usual launcher. Vortex reads the install path after you add the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, and Anniversary Edition are the busiest Vortex games. You manage plugins, SKSE, and collections from one profile instead of mixing MO2 folders by accident.

Fallout 4 and New Vegas

Fallout 4 Vortex setups and New Vegas lists (including packs like Viva New Vegas) use the same deploy flow. Keep F4SE or NVSE outside the staging folder if the game's script extender docs say so.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk Vortex support covers REDmod and archive mods. Install the game on Steam or GOG first, then add it in Vortex so deploy paths stay correct.

Stardew Valley and Baldur's Gate 3

These titles show up in Vortex game lists through extensions. They are not Bethesda plugin games, but the download and enable steps still run inside Vortex.

Nexus Mods and Vortex

Vortex is the Nexus Mods manager. You still browse files on nexusmods.com. Vortex is the client that fetches those files and deploys them.

Create a Nexus account, install Vortex, then associate Download with Vortex in your browser when Nexus asks. Premium users get faster downloads. A free account still works.

  1. Install Vortex from the Windows EXE on this page.
  2. Open Vortex and sign in with Nexus Mods.
  3. Add a managed game and let Vortex find the Steam or launcher folder.
  4. On a Nexus file page, choose Download with Vortex, then enable and deploy in the app.

Install Vortex on Windows

You need a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and enough free space for the 349 MB installer plus your mods. Vortex itself is smaller after setup. Mods and collections take the real disk space.

Put the staging folder on the same drive as the game when you can. That keeps deploy speed high and avoids copy errors across disks.

First launch

  1. Download vortex-setup-2.7.2.exe from files.modvortex.com.
  2. Run the EXE. Windows SmartScreen may ask you to keep the file because it came from a browser. Open the details and keep it if the publisher is Black Tree Gaming Ltd.
  3. Finish setup, then open Vortex.
  4. Sign in to Nexus Mods when you want 1-click downloads.
  5. Select your game, confirm the install path, and set a staging folder.
  6. Install a small mod first, deploy, then launch the game to confirm the path is right.

What the staging folder is

The staging folder is where Vortex keeps enabled mods before it writes them into the game directory. It is not the same as your downloads folder.

If Vortex warns that staging sits on another drive, move it. A staging folder on the game drive avoids slow copies and failed deploys.

Do not delete staging while Vortex is open. Use Purge in Vortex if you need the game folder clean, then deploy again when you are ready.

Vortex vs Mod Organizer 2

Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is the usual alternative for Skyrim and Fallout. MO2 uses a virtual file system and gives you tighter control. Vortex aims at a shorter path from Nexus download to a working game, with profiles and conflict rules in the UI.

Pick Vortex if you want Nexus collections and 1-click downloads with less folder work. Pick MO2 if you already maintain a large manual load order and you like its virtual overlay.

You can keep both installed. Do not let them manage the same game folder at the same time.

Linux

The GitHub installer we host is a Windows EXE. Nexus Mods does not ship a first-class Linux build on that release page.

Some players run Vortex through Wine or Proton. That path breaks often after updates. This site does not offer a Linux package or a support promise for Wine.

Is Vortex Mod Manager safe?

Vortex is open source under GPL-3.0. The Windows installer is signed by Black Tree Gaming Ltd. Antivirus tools still flag large Electron setups from time to time. Compare the file name and size with the GitHub release if you want a second check.

A safe Vortex download is the Windows EXE. It is not an APK, not a HappyMod pack, not a "game vortex" mobile APK, and not a random zip that claims to unlock paid Nexus files.

This site hosts copies of the public GitHub installers on files.modvortex.com. Read the legal page for license and disclaimer notes. Email support if a link returns the wrong file.

Who this page is for

Use this Vortex download if you want a current Windows installer, a short install path, and a plain explanation of staging, Nexus 1-click, and the usual games.

Skip this page if you wanted Skyrim mods themselves, a Fallout 4 collection walkthrough, or Mod Organizer 2. Those are different jobs. Vortex only manages the files you already chose.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Nexus Mods 1-click downloads and collections
  • Profiles and conflict rules in one UI
  • Wide game list through extensions
  • Free, open source Windows installer

Trade-offs

  • Windows-first. Linux is unofficial.
  • Heavy collections still need disk space and patience
  • MO2 users may prefer a virtual file system
  • You still need script extenders and game runtimes outside Vortex

FAQ

Where do I download Vortex Mod Manager?

Use the Windows EXE on this page. The current stable file is vortex-setup-2.7.2.exe on files.modvortex.com. We also host vortex-setup-2.7.1.exe and the current beta vortex-setup-2.8.0-beta.2.exe.

Is this the official Nexus Mods Vortex?

The app is the official Vortex from Nexus Mods. modvortex.com is independent. We host the public installer and write setup notes. We are not Nexus Mods.

How do I install Vortex on Windows?

Download the EXE, run it, then add your game and a staging folder. The install steps cover SmartScreen, Nexus login, and the first deploy.

Is Vortex Mod Manager safe?

Yes, when you use the real Windows installer. Vortex is GPL-3.0 software from Nexus Mods. Ignore APK listings and unrelated "vortex mod" mobile pages. See the safety notes for publisher checks.

Does Vortex work with Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Cyberpunk 2077?

Yes. Those are the games people most often pair with Vortex. Add the Steam (or other) install in Vortex, then download mods for that game. Game files themselves are not on this site.

Should I use Vortex or Mod Organizer 2?

Vortex is simpler for Nexus collections and 1-click downloads. MO2 suits manual Skyrim and Fallout load orders. Do not manage one game with both at once. Read Vortex vs MO2 for the short version.

Does Vortex run on Linux?

Not as an official GitHub EXE. Some people try Wine. We only host the Windows installer. See the Linux note.

What is the Vortex staging folder?

It is the working copy of enabled mods before deploy. Put it on the same drive as the game. Details sit in the staging folder section.

Can I get an older Vortex version?

Yes. This site hosts the previous stable installer 2.7.1 next to 2.7.2. Builds older than that stay on the Nexus-Mods/Vortex GitHub releases page. New PCs should start on 2.7.2.

Should I install the Vortex beta?

Only if you want to test 2.8.0-beta.2 before it becomes stable. Keep a backup, and go back to 2.7.2 or 2.7.1 if a game or collection breaks.

Get Vortex and start a game

Download Vortex Mod Manager 2.7.2 from files.modvortex.com, run the Windows installer, then add the game you actually play. That is the whole path for a vortex mod manager download.
